Rukungiri-Kabale University has officially launched its pioneer campus in Rukungiri District, a milestone aimed at improving access to higher education and aligning with the government’s broader goal of socio-economic transformation.
The launch event took place at the site of the former Rukungiri Primary Teachers’ College in Buyanja Town Council, which has now been converted into the Kabale University Rukungiri Campus.
This move follows a national education reform policy phasing out Grade III teaching certificates in favor of degree-level qualifications for primary school educators.
Speaking at the event, Eric Gitta, Principal Education Officer for University Education and Training at the Ministry of Education and Sports, explained that the initiative stemmed from a growing demand for university placement, which existing institutions cannot fully accommodate.
He noted that this transition supports President Yoweri Museveni’s manifesto commitment to broaden access to higher education and equip teachers with enhanced academic qualifications.
Prof. Joy Constance Kwesiga, Vice Chancellor of Kabale University, described the development as a major step forward for the region. She revealed that the new campus will officially open in August 2025, with an initial focus on teacher education, Agriculture , Business Information Technology, Social work and Public administration among other academic programs.

Prof. Kwesiga emphasized the university’s dedication to boosting educational standards and empowering the community through accessible, quality education.
Prof. Mondo Kagonyera, the Chancellor of Kabale University, underscored the importance of the campus in the government’s broader strategy to reform teacher education.
He reiterated that the foundation of any progressive society lies in education, which plays a vital role in community development and transformation.
In his remarks, Rt. Rev. Onesimus Asiimwe, Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, hailed the collaboration between Kabale University and the defunct Rukungiri Primary Teachers’ College as a turning point for academic advancement in the region.
He said the new campus would offer more opportunities for local students to pursue university education and improve their career prospects.
The Rukungiri campus becomes the first public university presence in the district and is anticipated to drive educational excellence, job creation, and local economic development in Rukungiri and surrounding areas.
