President Museveni and the First Lady also Minister of Education and Sports,  Janet Museveni have participated in the ongoing mass registration and renewal exercise of the National Identity cards.

Their national IDs were renewed at State Lodge, Nakasero.

The renewal exercise was efficiently conducted by a team from NIRA , led by the Executive Director, Ms. Rosemary Kisembo.

The president and the first lady asked members of the public who have not yet renewed their national IDs to do so.

The registration of citizens is regarded as a crucial component of national security, ensuring that every individual is accounted for within the nation’s identity framework.

Enhanced biometric technology associated with these ID cards provides a reliable and unalterable
means of establishing identity.

This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening national identity systems and fostering socio-economic transformation.

The ongoing mass registration exercise is meant to renew the national IDs but also add advanced security features like the iris for easy identification.

The national ID renewal exercise officially commenced on May 27, 2025, following a successful pilot phase conducted from May 2 to May 26, 2025.

To ease the process, NIRA introduced an online pre-registration system that allows Ugandans to fill in their personal details online before visiting a registration center for biometric data capture.

The innovation aims to make the process faster and more convenient for all citizens.
