AKANYIJUKA RICHARD QUITS NRM, DECLARES INDEPENDENT BID FOR RUKUNGIRI MUNICIPALITY MP SEAT

By Julius Akanyijuka

RUKUNGIRI- Long-serving National Resistance Movement (NRM) member and aspiring legislator Richard Akanyijuka has officially parted ways with the ruling party, announcing his intention to contest as an independent candidate for the Rukungiri Municipality Member of Parliament seat in the 2025–2026 elections.

Akanyijuka made the declaration during a press conference held on Sunday at his home office in Kifunjo Cell, Eastern Division, Rukungiri Municipality.

Flanked by supporters, he criticized the internal dynamics of the NRM, citing unfair electoral practices, poor election monitoring mechanisms, and what he described as a “biased and sectarian administration.

“The party I have loyally served for more than two terms has failed to uphold fairness and transparency. I can no longer be part of a system that undermines democracy and marginalizes voices that challenge underperformance.

“Akanyijuka did not mince words as he laid out his vision for Rukungiri Municipality, pledging to close what he termed “glaring leadership gaps” and to provide inclusive representation that prioritizes youth empowerment, better service delivery, and economic transformation.

As the 2025 campaigns gain momentum, Akanyijuka joins a growing list of independents hoping to capitalize on what they call widespread disillusionment with party politics.
