KABALE -St Mary’s College Rushoroza has registered a historic 100 percent pass rate in the 2025 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations, with all 278 candidates scoring Result One and qualifying for Advanced Level studies.
The achievement places the school among the top-performing secondary schools in the Kigezi sub-region and highlights the growing impact of the new competence-based secondary school curriculum.
According to results released by the Uganda National Examinations Board, there was a sharp reduction in the number of candidates who failed to qualify for the UCE certificate nationwide.
The proportion of unsuccessful candidates dropped from 1.9 percent in 2024 to only 0.31 percent in 2025, signaling significant progress in the education sector.
Speaking on the school’s performance, the Deputy Headteacher in charge of academics, Godfrey Barigye, described the new curriculum as both demanding and transformative.
“The new curriculum requires teachers to guide learners through continuous assessment, practical activities and project-based learning,” Barigye said. “It is not just about teaching for exams, but about building skills and competence in learners.”
St Mary’s College Rushoroza presented 278 candidates for the 2025 UCE examinations and recorded an impressive total of 367 As, 1,503 Bs and 887 Cs.
Barigye attributed the strong performance to collective effort from all stakeholders.
“This success is a result of committed teachers, cooperative parents, disciplined learners and a supportive school administration,” he noted.
He further emphasized that the hands-on approach under the competence-based curriculum has strengthened learners’ understanding and practical abilities.
“Our students now learn by doing. This has greatly improved their confidence, comprehension and problem-solving skills,” Barigye added.
Education leaders in Kabale Municipality have welcomed the results, saying they demonstrate that schools are steadily adapting to the new curriculum.
They added that continued support for teachers and learners will be key to sustaining and improving performance in future UCE examinations across the municipality and the wider Kigezi sub-region.
