RUKUNGYIRI-Christians of Rwanyanja Church of Uganda have raised a total of UGX 38 million during a fundraising drive held alongside a Holy Confirmation ceremony on Sunday.
The event, held in Bugangari under the North Kigezi Diocese, was presided over by the diocesan bishop, Onesmus Asiimwe.
The fundraising aimed at supporting the construction of a new church building at Rwanyanja.
According to organizers, Christians contributed UGX 31 million in cash and 200 bags of cement, bringing the total contribution to UGX 38 million.
Bishop Calls for Genuine Faith
While preaching after confirming more than 45 Christians, Bishop Asiimwe expressed concern that many believers treat Holy Confirmation as a mere ritual without first accepting Jesus Christ as their personal savior.
“Some Christians undergo confirmation as a formality without true salvation. I urge both the young and the old to first confess their sins and accept Christ before participating in Holy Communion and other sacred church activities,” he said.
The bishop also criticized the growing trend of extravagant celebrations involving alcohol during religious milestones such as baptisms, confirmations, and marriages.
“It is wrong to turn spiritual occasions into parties dominated by alcohol. These are sacred steps in one’s journey of faith and should be treated with reverence,” he added.
Message of Hope Amid Poverty
Bishop Asiimwe encouraged Christians facing poverty to remain hopeful and faithful, emphasizing the importance of hard work alongside prayer.
“Have faith in God, but also work hard. Engage in productive activities like growing coffee. With faith, sacrifice, and determination, you will overcome life’s challenges,” he said.
He further revealed that the North Kigezi Diocese had contributed UGX 1 million towards the church construction and encouraged believers to remain committed so the church can grow and eventually attain full archdeaconry status.
Church Leaders Appreciate Support
The head of laity for Bugangari Archdeaconry, Kwesiga Boaz Ruteera, expressed gratitude to the bishop and Christians for their generosity and unity.
“This contribution shows love, cooperation, and commitment to God’s work. We pledge to ensure the church is completed before Christmas 2026,” Ruteera said.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to supporting church activities and helping the needy, noting that serving others is a way of serving God.
The parish priest, Richard Kwehangana, confirmed that over 45 Christians were admitted to Holy Communion, while five believers transitioned from Catholicism to the Anglican faith through baptism.
He commended the congregation, church leaders, and the bishop for their support and dedication.
Joy as Fundraising Goal Grows
Christians from across Bugangari Archdeaconry celebrated the successful fundraiser with joy and gratitude, pledging continued support toward church development and other religious activities.
The fundraising marks a significant step toward completing the new church structure, with leaders expressing optimism that the project will be finalized by the end of 2026.
