Hon. Andrew Aja Baryayanga Moves to Revive Kashanje Gravity Flow Scheme to Address Water Shortage in Kabale Municipality.

Kabale -As part of efforts to address the persistent water shortage in Kabale Municipality, the NRM flag bearer for Kabale Municipality, Hon. Andrew Aja Baryayanga, on Thursday visited the Kashanje Gravity Flow Scheme, which has long struggled due to poor maintenance.

Hon. Baryayanga noted that the system has been nonfunctional since his departure from Parliament, leading to severe water shortages in the area.

He explained that a team is now working to repair and replace key components—referred to locally as “spanners”—to restore the scheme and ensure water begins flowing once again.

He revealed that the rehabilitation work currently underway includes cleaning a 30,000-litre water tank, which will then feed water downstream through the old gravity system.

However, he expressed concern that all the 23 tap stands that once served residents are no longer in existence.

“We are now identifying where the water will be directed once the system is restored so that we can also work on rebuilding the tap stands,” he said.

Hon. Baryayanga confirmed that water has already begun entering the tank, and the remaining task is to complete the cleaning process before releasing water to flow downstream. Once fully operational, the system is expected to serve more than 4,000 residents in Northern Division.

He also announced that after the Kashanje project, the team will move to rehabilitate the Bugongyi Gravity Flow Scheme, which supplies water to both Upper and Lower Bugongyi, with the goal of ensuring residents access clean and safe drinking water.
