Kabale District Leaders Rally Ugandans against Plastic Pollution at World Environment Day School Competitions

KABALE -The Assistant Resident District Commissioner of Kabale, Turyomurugyendo Christmas, has called on Ugandans to become ambassadors in the fight against plastic pollution.

He made the call today while officiating at the 2025 World Environment Day school competitions in Music, Dance, and Drama in primary schools held at NTC Kabale in the Southern Division of Kabale Municipality.

The event, held in anticipation of the official World Environment Day commemoration on June 25th, 2025, Organized by National Environment Management Authority in Partnership with Caritas Uganda drew participation from several schools in the district.

This year’s theme is “Fight against Plastic Pollution”, and the main celebration is scheduled to take place at Kigezi High School Primary Lower Grounds, where President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is expected to be the Guest of Honour.

Turyomurugyendo emphasized that it’s the responsibility of every Ugandan to take up the mantle in protecting the environment. He stated that they are the ones who stand to benefit from a clean and conducive environment, and he urged them to take the lead in greening their surroundings.

Turyomurugyendo expressed concern that many people remain uninformed about the importance of wetlands and the dangers posed by continued encroachment.

He stressed the urgent need for community education on how to responsibly vacate these protected ecosystems.

He noted that wetlands are vital for preserving biodiversity, regulating climate, and providing water sources for agriculture and domestic use emphasizing that it’s the responsibility of every Ugandan to take up the mantle in protecting the environment.

He stated that they are the ones who stand to benefit from a clean and conducive environment, and he urged schools to take the lead in greening their surroundings.

He also echoed President Museveni’s directive on the protection of wetlands, noting that efforts are already underway hence calling on citizens to join the campaign for a greener “Pearl of Africa.”

Speaking at the same event, Kabale District Education Officer, Timwijukye Moses Bwengye, highlighted the importance of integrating environmental awareness into school activities. He praised the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) for spearheading the initiative in schools, citing the role of education institutions as key agents of change.

Bwengye noted that competitions like those not only showcased talent but also served as an important platform for fostering knowledge and awareness about environmental conservation.

He stated that schools were champions of change and expressed his belief that if students put what they learned into practice, there would be a transformation in how the environment was managed and protected.

Four schools were competing in different categories: Kigezi High School Primary, Kabale Primary School, Bishop Asili Memorial School, and Canaan Primary School. Bishop Asili emerged as the overall winner, and two schools which are Kigezi high school primary and kabale primary school will represent Kabale at the national event in their respective categories.
