NRM Faces Petition Over Alleged Irregularities in Butanda Sub-county in Parish Elections

By Our reporter

Kabale, Uganda – May 13, 2025-A formal petition has been submitted to the Office of the Secretary General of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), citing alleged irregularities in the recently concluded parish-level party elections in Nyamiryango Parish, Butanda Sub-county, Kabale District.

The petition, dated May 12, 2025, was authored by Akampurira Vincent, a contestant for the position of General Secretary under the mainstream NRM structure.

Akampurira alleges that a candidate who originally belonged to a Special Interest Group (SIG) crossed over and contested for a mainstream position an action he claims contravenes the NRM electoral guidelines.

“This development has raised serious concerns regarding adherence to the NRM electoral guidelines and the integrity of the internal election process,” the petition states.

Akampurira has called on the NRM Secretariat to urgently investigate the matter and clarify whether it is constitutionally permissible for a candidate to shift from a SIG to the mainstream structure within the same election cycle.

He further warned that failure to address such concerns could erode confidence in the party’s internal democratic processes and compromise the credibility of future elections.

The petition was officially signed and submitted by Akampurira Vincent of Kinyamari Village, Nyamiryango Parish, Butanda Sub-county.

Efforts to obtain comments from local NRM leaders were still underway by the time of publication.
