One Dead, 13 Critically Injured in Tragic Kabale-Mbarara Highway Accident

Kabale, Uganda – April 17, 2025

One person has been confirmed dead and 13 others are battling for their lives following a tragic road accident that occurred on Thursday afternoon at around 2:30 PM in Kabaraga Village, shortly after the fresh food station along the Kabale-Mbarara highway.

According to ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, the crash involved a white Toyota Hiace, registration number UBL 327M.

The vehicle was reportedly being driven by an unidentified driver who is currently on the run.

The deceased has been identified as Agaba Innocent, a 40-year-old teacher at Kyogo Secondary School in Rukiga and a resident of Kakuga Village, Rutare 1, Muhanga Town Council in Rukiga District.

He was one of the passengers aboard the ill-fated vehicle.

The 13 victims who survived the crash — seven men and six women — sustained critical injuries and were rushed to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for emergency treatment. Their identities remain unknown due to the severity of their conditions.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver was over-speeding and lost control of the vehicle upon reaching Kabaraga Village, causing it to overturn several times.

Police officers led by ASP Mucunguzi quickly responded to the scene.

The body of the deceased was transported to Kabale Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination, while the wrecked vehicle was towed to Kabale Central Police Station for inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).

ASP Maate confirmed that investigations are still ongoing and urged motorists to observe traffic rules, especially speed limits, to prevent such tragic incidents.

“We continue to appeal to all road users to be vigilant and prioritize safety on our roads. Lives are being lost unnecessarily due to reckless driving,” he said.
