Ugandan artist Nu York Da Styla is currently in custody following his arrest by police on charges related to homosexuality. The Mumuleke artist was taken into custody on May 27, 2023, shortly after he performed at the Buganda Kingdom Radio Festival.
The singer, who has long been associated with Eddy Kenzo’s Big Talent label, is now in jail awaiting legal proceedings. The origins of these allegations remain unclear, and it is uncertain whether they hold any merit.
It is notable that the Ugandan Parliament has approved the Anti Homosexuality Act (AHA), which is pending the President’s approval to become law. The President is anticipated to sign this legislation soon. However, the country has received significant backlash from the global community for what many have described as a harsh law.
One provision of this law states that individuals found guilty of aggravated homosexuality could potentially face the death penalty, while those who assist in the act might be subjected to more than 10 years in prison or hefty fines.
The outcome for Nu York remains uncertain at this time, but a police spokesperson confirmed the arrest and mentioned that they are conducting investigations. He refrained from providing further comments, stating that the police will share additional information once their investigations are concluded.
