Politics Is Service, Not Livelihood — Museveni Tells Lyantonde Leaders

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has called on leaders in Lyantonde District to separate politics from personal gain, emphasizing that true leadership should be rooted in service to the people.

Speaking at a campaign rally at Kaliro Town Council Playground on Thursday, where he unveiled the NRM Manifesto for 2026–2031, the President warned that treating leadership as a source of livelihood fuels political conflicts.

“Politics should never be your livelihood. If you join politics because of money, you are doing the country a disservice. Separate your survival from leadership. With money or without money, you must serve,” President Museveni said.

Drawing on his own experience during the liberation struggle, he reminded supporters that the National Resistance Movement (NRM) was founded on sacrifice, not personal enrichment.

“Who was paying us when we were in the bush? No one. Politics is about the aims of the population and how you relate with them,” he noted.

President Museveni also highlighted peace as the NRM’s greatest achievement, noting that it was deliberately built by rejecting sectarian politics and strengthening national institutions.

“Peace is not accidental. It came because we rejected the politics of division and built strong institutions like the army, police and judiciary,” he said

Echoing calls for inclusiveness, he emphasized that the NRM belongs to all Ugandans. “NRM welcomes everyone, women, youth and children, because everyone is important,” he said.

On election-related violence, the President issued a stern warning: “I hear there are people planning to riot during elections. They should not dare. No one will disrupt Uganda’s peace.” He added that stability has allowed generations to grow, work, and prosper.

Turning to infrastructure, President Museveni confirmed that road works had begun on key routes including Mubende–Kabamba–Nkonji–Ntutsi–Sembabule, with future plans for Ntutsi–Kasagama–Lyantonde and Lyantonde–Rwamahwa–Rakai. “There is a contractor on the ground and the work has started,” he assured residents.

On wealth creation, the President stressed that development alone does not end poverty, outlining four key sectors: commercial agriculture, manufacturing, services, and ICT.

He promoted the four-acre model, urging households to engage in productive activities. Citing successful farmers such as George Matongo of Ngoma, he noted that government programmes like the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Emyooga aim to support wealth generation.

Addressing unemployment, President Museveni emphasized that jobs are not solely the government’s responsibility, pointing out that factories now employ more Ugandans than the public service. He also highlighted the importance of markets, noting that Uganda produces more than it consumes in several sectors.

The President reaffirmed his commitment to free education and skills training through Presidential Skilling Hubs, sharing testimonies from beneficiaries who have acquired skills, started businesses, and created jobs.

Speakers at the rally echoed the call for unity and peace. Speaker of Parliament and NRM Second National Vice Chairperson (Female), Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, praised Lyantonde’s historical contribution to national stability, while also raising concerns over land issues at Ranch Number 7 and potential encroachment on Mpumudde Forest Reserve.

NRM Chairperson for Lyantonde District, Ezra Mugenyi, commended residents for maintaining peace, noting that stability has enabled government programmes to improve livelihoods.

Veteran politician Mzee Matthew Rukikaire urged residents to remain united and rally behind President Museveni, citing Lyantonde’s long-standing role in promoting national stability.
