Rubabo MP-Elect Mathius Mwesirwa Rwabugumi Launches Communal Effort to Rehabilitate Kigina Bridge

Rukungiri: The Member of Parliament-elect for Rubabo County, Mathius Mwesirwa Rwabugumi, has launched a communal initiative to rehabilitate Kigina Bridge along Kisiizi Road in Rukungiri District, in a bid to improve transport and boost local trade.

The bridge, which connects Nyarushanje Sub-County and Kebison Sub-County, is a vital link between Nyarushanje and Kebison markets, serving hundreds of residents and traders who rely on it for daily movement of goods and services.Speaking during the launch, Rwabugumi said the bridge had deteriorated due to persistent water flow from surrounding hills, making it difficult for pedestrians, motorists, and traders to cross.

“This bridge has been a major challenge for our people. Its poor condition has affected the movement of goods and services. By working together as a community, we can restore it and improve livelihoods,” he said.

He noted that the rehabilitation effort will ease transportation, enhance access to markets, and support economic activities in the area.

Residents welcomed the initiative, saying they have long struggled with transport disruptions caused by the bridge’s poor state.

Some noted that during heavy rains, crossing becomes nearly impossible, affecting business and access to essential services.

Local residents including Moses Maganya, Patrick Owoyesigire, and boda boda rider Enoch Mucunguzi expressed optimism that the rehabilitation will significantly improve mobility and increase business opportunities.

They also commended Rwabugumi for supporting the communal work with a tractor, which is expected to speed up the rehabilitation process.

The initiative reflects a growing trend of community-driven development efforts aimed at addressing infrastructure challenges and improving livelihoods in rural areas.
