Rubanda Woman MP Hon. Prossy Àkampurira Urges Christians to Prioritize Household Income to Fight Poverty

By Enock Ndyamuhakyi

Rubanda, Uganda – May 11, 2025-The Commissioner of Parliament and Woman Member of Parliament for Rubanda District, Hon. Prossy Akampurira Begumiisa Mbabazi, has urged Christians to focus on increasing their household incomes as a key measure in combating poverty and improving livelihoods.

Hon. Akampurira made the call today during a thanksgiving ceremony held at Keeru Church of Uganda in Nyamweru Sub-county of Rubanda district.

The event honored Mr. Fred Ahabwe, the LC2 Chairperson of Bigungiro Parish and Chairman of the Keeru Church Building Construction Committee.

Addressing the congregation, Hon. Akampurira stressed the importance of financial stability at the family level, saying that many household challenges stem from low income and poor economic planning.

“As the NRM government continues its fight against poverty, I encourage everyone regardless of gender to actively engage in income-generating activities,” she said, adding that when both men and women contribute to the family’s welfare, it reduces the financial burden on men and helps to curb domestic violence.

She also urged parents to use the ongoing school holiday to spend quality time with their children, guiding and mentoring them.

“As children return home for the holidays, I urge all parents to dedicate time to instill values and mentorship in them,” Hon. Akampurira said.

With political mobilization picking up pace ahead of the 2026 general elections, Hon. Akampurira also appealed to the public to elect people-centered leaders.“Let us vote for leaders who are transparent, accountable, and focused on service delivery,” she said.

“We must also ensure peaceful elections because politics should not divide us we are all striving for a better Uganda.”

At the same event, Rev. Henry Nzaana, the Parish Priest of St. John’s Bugongi Church of Uganda, raised concern over the increasing number of children working in Bigungiro local market.

Rev. Nzaana warned that early exposure to money is drawing children away from school, putting their futures and the development of the community at risk.

“If this trend continues, we risk losing a generation to poverty and underdevelopment,” he cautioned, urging local leaders to take immediate action.
