Vanansio Babweyaka Remembered as Philanthropist and Pillar of Community Development

RUBANDA –The late Vanansio Babweyaka, a celebrated businessman and community leader, has been remembered by national and local leaders as a devoted philanthropist who championed education, unity, and social welfare throughout his life. Babweyaka, who is suspected to have succumbed to cancer, passed away on Friday, May 16, 2025, at Mulago Hospital.

He was laid to rest on May 19 at his ancestral home in Bushuura Ward, Hamuhambo Town Council, Rubanda District.

Former Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, who spoke at the funeral mass, described Babweyaka as a generous man who significantly contributed to educational initiatives and consistently supported the needy.

Dr. Rugunda commended Babweyaka’s efforts in mobilizing resources for community projects, including fundraising for the construction of Rwakayundo Catholic Church, his home parish.

He called on the public to follow Babweyaka’s example of love, generosity, and unity.

Babweyaka began his career in tailoring and design before expanding into the timber and hospitality industries. In later years, he invested in tree planting and animal farming, creating employment opportunities for many across the region.

Rubanda West Member of Parliament Hon. Kamuntu Moses Mwongyera praised Babweyaka as an entrepreneur who employed numerous Ugandans and contributed to local economic development.

LC5 Chairperson Ampeire Stephen Kasyaba echoed similar sentiments, describing the late tycoon as a unifying figure who served the people of Rubanda without political bias.

During a requiem mass held on May 18, State Minister for Finance (General Duties), Hon. Henry Musasizi, and Commissioner of Parliament, Hon. Akampurira Mbabazi Prossy, also hailed Babweyaka’s contribution to employment and peacebuilding in the community.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Melania Babweyaka said her husband was a man who loved deeply and always worked to maintain unity among family members.

The family and community members continue to celebrate his legacy as one rooted in compassion, service, and dedication to the betterment of others.

Born on October 20, 1949, in Rwakayundo Cell to Yohana Nyamurya and Evalina Kokyenga, Babweyaka was one of seven siblings, three of whom—Loy Zaribwende, Rwanzigu Posiano, and Deudanta Gararengana—are still alive. He is survived by his wife, Melania Babweyaka, 10 children (3 sons and 7 daughters), 42 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren. He was also the uncle of Libino Byamukama, a journalist with Eye Television and Hope Radio.
