RUKUNGIRI -Kabale University has made a historic expansion into Rukungiri District, becoming the first public university to establish a presence in the area since its founding.
The announcement was made during a press conference held on May 22, 2025, at the former Rukungiri Primary Teachers’ College in Kyakiina, Buyanja Town Council, which will now host the university’s new campus.
The development marks a significant milestone in higher education for the Kigezi region and follows a collaborative agreement between Kabale University stakeholders, the foundation body, Rukungiri District leadership, and the Ministry of Education and Sports.
The move is aligned with a national policy shift to phase out Grade III and IV teacher training in favor of university degree programs.
Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Prof. Johnny Mugisha, hailed the initiative as a transformative step that will improve access to quality higher education in the region while also stimulating local economic growth.

“This new campus will serve as a gateway for academic advancement and economic development, not only in Rukungiri but across the wider Kigezi region,” Prof. Mugisha stated.
Academic Registrar Naris Tibenderana revealed that the Rukungiri Campus would commence operations gradually, starting with a limited number of programs, including Bachelor and Diploma of Education as well as Bachelor of Agriculture.
Deputy Academic Registrar Canon Benon Kwikiriza added that the presence of the university in Rukungiri would enhance academic opportunities for residents, create employment, support local enterprises, and contribute to urbanization.
The official launch of the campus is scheduled for May 23, 2025, and will be presided over by Kabale University Chancellor Prof. Mondo Kagonyera.
The ceremony is expected to attract key officials from the Ministry of Education and Sports, local political leaders, and members of the community.
