President Museveni Hails Grace Bikangaga for Transformative Role in Ugandan Society

KABALE – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has applauded the late Grace Bikangaga, wife of the late Canon John Bikangaga, for her outstanding contributions towards transforming Ugandan society, particularly in advancing girl child education and women empowerment.

The president’s remarks were delivered today by Hon. David Bahati, Uganda’s State Minister for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives (Industry) and Member of Parliament for Ndorwa West, yesterday 04 December 2025 during a burial service held at St Peter’s Cathedral Rugarama in Kabale municipality where Museveni praised Grace Bikangaga, affectionately known as “Nyina Boona,” for her tireless efforts in championing women’s rights, organizing savings groups, and mobilizing communities around health and education initiatives.“Grace Bikangaga played a transformative role in our country.

Her commitment to empowering women and promoting education for girls has left an indelible mark on the lives of many Ugandans,” Museveni said in his speech.

He further commended Mrs. Bikangaga for supporting her late husband, Canon John Bikangaga, who served as Rutakirwa Engabo ya Kigezi from 1963 to 1966 noting that Canon Bikangaga’s work in government and his stand against politics of identity and sectarianism contributed significantly to the peace and stability enjoyed in Uganda today.

Museveni urged Ugandans to emulate Grace Bikangaga’s dedication to community service and nation-building, emphasizing that such values are essential for continued progress and unity in the country.

Dr. Livingston Ruhakana Rugunda, former Prime Minister of Uganda, applauded Mrs. Bikangaga for her exemplary life, noting that she inspired countless women through her active participation in community engagement meetings saying that Grace Bikangaga was a beacon of hope and a role model whose dedication to uplifting others will be remembered for generations.

The Rt. Rev. Bishop Gaddie Akanjuna, Bishop of the Diocese of Kigezi, led the congregation in celebrating Mrs. Bikangaga’s unwavering support for the church and her positive influence on her family and the wider community explaining that she has left behind a legacy of faith, service, and love, a true testament to a life well-lived,” Bishop Akanjuna said during his sermon.

The event was attended by local leaders, family members, and community representatives, all celebrating the legacy of Grace Bikangaga and her lasting impact on Ugandan society.

Grace Bikangaga has died at the age of 101 leaving behind five children, twelve grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren.

She was laid to rest yesterday in Rutooma Ward, Kabale Municipality.
