By Julius Akanyijuka

Leaders in Rukungiri District have commissioned a series of development projects in Rujumbura Constituency aimed at improving education infrastructure and service delivery.

The projects, implemented by the district local government, include classroom blocks, an administration block, and a school main hall across several schools in the constituency.

At Kakindo Primary School in Bugangari Sub-county, a two-classroom block constructed by Ruhinda Services Ltd was commissioned at a cost of Shs94 million. The school headteacher, Esther Nahabwe, thanked the government for the support but noted that the school still faces challenges, including a lack of staff quarters and adequate sanitation facilities.

“We appreciate the government for this development, but we still need teachers’ houses and more toilets to improve learning conditions,” Nahabwe said.

The company director, Ambrose Arinaitwe Kampikaho, assured stakeholders of quality work.

“We ensured that the project was completed on time and meets the required standards,” he said.

At Omumurama Model Primary School in Bikurungu Town Council, another two-classroom block was commissioned. The project was constructed by Kinombe Nyaruzinga Construction Ltd at a cost of Shs41.3 million. The school headteacher, Richard Afasha, expressed gratitude to the government for supporting the school’s infrastructure.

Similarly, at Bikurungu Centenary Primary School, Ofram Agencies Ltd constructed a main hall and two classroom blocks at a cost of Shs237.57 million. The headteacher, Emmy Mujuni, pledged to ensure proper maintenance of the new facilities.

“We shall take good care of these buildings to ensure they serve learners for a long time,” Mujuni said.

In Bikurungu Town Council, Tical Construction Ltd completed an administration block valued at Shs150 million.

While commissioning the projects, the Resident District Commissioner, Bron Kikashemeza, urged leaders to fight corruption and ensure government programs benefit the intended communities.

“Our role is to monitor government programs and ensure that citizens receive quality services,” Kikashemeza said.

He also called for cooperation among teachers, parents, and school administrators to improve academic performance, emphasizing discipline as a key factor for success.

“Discipline is the foundation of success. Learners must remain focused and committed to their studies,” he added.

Rukungiri Chief Administrative Officer, Fredrick Byekwaso, urged parents to prioritize education by investing in their children’s future.

“Education is a lasting legacy. Parents must provide scholastic materials and ensure children have basic needs like food to support their learning,” Byekwaso said.

District Engineer Julius Bagira and District Education Officer Jackson Turyahumura emphasized the importance of maintaining school infrastructure.

“School leaders must ensure that these facilities are well maintained to sustain their usefulness,” they advised.

Meanwhile, Isaac Kaharuza, who represented the Minister of Security and Rujumbura Constituency MP Jim Muhwezi Katugugu, urged residents to avoid unnecessary demonstrations and respect leaders at all levels.

He also encouraged school leaders to mobilize learners to attend classes regularly, noting that consistent attendance is key to improving education standards in the district.

“Regular school attendance is critical if we are to improve academic performance in our district,” Kaharuza said.

The commissioned projects are expected to enhance the learning environment and boost education standards across Rujumbura Constituency.
