Students of Bwongyera Girls Secondary School in Bushenyi District have been encouraged to remain focused on their education, develop strong personal principles, and embrace financial discipline in order to secure a better future.
The call was made by the Director of Teneger Africa, Robert Tumusiime, during a three-day students’ conference held at the school.
Addressing a thousand of students, Tumusiime emphasized the importance of living by principles, noting that success in life begins with having clear values and goals.
“In life, you must first have principles. Your principles will guide your decisions, shape your character, and determine the kind of future you build for yourself,” Tumusiime said.
He challenged students to invest in themselves through education, skills development, and positive habits that can help them achieve their dreams.
Tumusiime urged the learners to believe in their abilities and avoid comparing themselves to others.
“Believe in yourself and be yourself. Every person has unique abilities and talents. Focus on becoming the best version of yourself instead of trying to be someone else,” he advised.
The Teneger Africa Director also stressed the importance of financial literacy among young people, encouraging students to develop a saving culture at an early age.
“Learn to save money and be disciplined financially. The habits you develop now will determine how you manage opportunities and resources in the future,” he said.
Tumusiime further challenged students to reduce excessive dependence on their parents and guardians by learning practical skills and taking initiative in their personal development.
“Things change in life. You should not depend entirely on your parents. Learn to do things for yourselves, develop skills, and prepare for the responsibilities that await you in the future,” he added.
He encouraged the students to work hard in order to fight poverty and position themselves to take advantage of opportunities whenever they arise.
“Poverty can be defeated through hard work, discipline, and determination. When opportunities come, be prepared to seize them,” Tumusiime noted.
Speaking directly to Senior Six students, he reminded them that they are approaching a critical stage in life where the decisions they make will significantly influence their future careers and personal lives.
“You are now at a stage where every decision matters. Choose your friends wisely, stay focused on your studies, and make decisions that will help you achieve your goals,” he said.
The conference also provided students with an opportunity to interact with mentors and gain practical life skills beyond the classroom.
Some of the students who attended the conference said the sessions had inspired them to become more focused and responsible.
Shillah Akatukunda, one of the participants, said she had learned the importance of personal investment and self-confidence.
“I have learned that I need to believe in myself and invest in my future. The conference has motivated me to stay focused on my studies and work hard to achieve my dreams,” she said.
Another student, Joan, said the conference had equipped her with valuable lessons on financial discipline and personal growth.
“The speakers encouraged us to save money, work hard, and remain focused on our education. These are lessons that will help us throughout our lives,” she noted.
The students also expressed gratitude to the school’s administration, teachers, and parents for supporting their education through the provision of school fees, scholastic materials, and guidance.
“We thank our parents and the school administration for supporting us. Without their sacrifices, it would be difficult for us to perform well academically,” the students said.
The three-day conference forms part of ongoing efforts by Teneger Africa to empower young people with life skills, leadership qualities, and values that prepare them to become responsible citizens and future leaders.
School administrators welcomed the initiative, saying such mentorship programs complement classroom learning by helping students develop character, confidence, and practical skills necessary for success in life.
As the conference concluded, students were challenged to put the lessons learned into practice and remain committed to academic excellence, discipline, and personal development.
